Stora Enso and Northvolt are joining forces to create sustainable batteries using lignin-based hard carbon produced with renewable wood from the Nordic forests. The aim is to develop the world’s first industrialised battery featuring anode sourced entirely from European raw materials, lowering both the carbon footprint and the cost.
International technology group Andritz has received an order from Zweckverband Müllverwertung Schwandorf (ZMS) for a retrofit of the flue gas cleaning system in a furnace line at the municipal waste incineration facility in Schwandorf, Germany. Start-up of the plant is scheduled for mid-2024.
International technology group Andritz has received an order from Veolia Services Suomi, a Veolia Group company, to supply a biomethanol purification plant. The plant, which will be integrated into Metsä Fibre’s bioproduct mill in Äänekoski, Finland, refines the crude sulphate methanol generated in pulp production to obtain commercial-grade biomethanol.

At its Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland, Sappi Europe has invested an amount in the double-digit millions which will enable the full conversion of its energy supply to renewable bioenergy.
International technology group Andritz has signed an agreement with the Sofidel Group to upgrade hood technology at its Kisa tissue mill in Sweden. The Andritz equipment will enable Sofidel to use renewable gas (bio-syngas) to dry tissue or any other type of paper. This is the first-time that bio-syngas will be used in the paper industry for paper drying. Start-up is planned for the first half of 2023.
Valmet has been selected in a new public procurement process as the tenderer for completing the biomass boiler, flue gas cleaning and flue gas condensing system works for Vilnius Combined Heat and Power Plant (Vilnius CHP) in Lithuania. Vilnius CHP is working on a modern heat generation capacity expansion project in the Vilnius central heating system. The new public procurement process was needed since the original contractor was unable to complete the works.

International technology group Andritz has received an order from Forsyning Helsingør in Denmark to supply a Metris BOA measurement and analysis system including boiler operation advisor apps. Metris BOA – developed by Andritz – is a web app that utilizes live data as well as historical data from the plant to optimize and analyze power plant processes and monitor the equipment installed.

Andritz has received another order from the Hitachi Zosen Corporation in Japan to supply a 52.7-MW PowerFluid circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler on EPS basis. The boiler will be part of the biomass power plant in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, in Japan. Start-up is planned for 2025.
On 24 February Holmen acquired all shares in the part-owned wind farm Varsvik AB, located on Holmen land in Uppland. The purchase boosts Holmen’s business in renewable energy and marks a further step in terms of the company’s ambition to contribute to climate transition.
